The best-ever breakfast recipes for cold winter mornings
Whetehr you prefer savoury or sweet, these delicious breakfasts will set you up for the day
January is a time for staying indoors, and these recipes are perfect for a cold, grey Sunday at home. One of the reasons I love to cook is that I like to look after people. Cooking is an act of love and respect. Feelings that can be difficult to communicate in other ways can be shown by just making someone a cup of tea or a bit of toast. I like to think friends at home and even guests at my restaurants will feel the emotion behind the food. Making breakfast is the best example of this gesture. People are at their most vulnerable in the morning and a good breakfast can set them up for the day.
Sometimes in the morning we want a sugar hit, and my gingerbread pancakes will deliver that in style. They’re great with stewed fruit or even a cheeky scattering of boozy marinated prunes, or, if you still have some kicking around, brandy butter.
If you prefer a savoury breakfast, my version of the classic omelette Arnold Bennett is a bit more of a frittata than an omelette, but the combination of smoked haddock, potatoes and eggs creates a comforting substantial breakfast that will make you feel happy and satisfied for longer than any sugary treat will.
Potato cakes are another great breakfast idea. I sometimes knock them up when I want a morning carb fix but there is no bread in the house – they only take a minute, and always hit the spot.
My favourite breakfast, however, has to be Indian: fluffy steamed fermented rice treats such as idli or dosa or, as I give here, a deliciouschickpea and potato-curry-stuffed flatbread. I know curry seems a bit full-on first thing in the morning but with a strong cup of tea and a downpour outside it works fabulously well.
Breakfast has the potential to be the best meal of the day, so it’s worth taking the time it deserves to cook it.
